Targus

Optionally Piloted Vehicle

Development

TARGUS is an R&D project whose final objective is the development of an OPV (Optionally Piloted Vehicle) system ready to carry out unmanned operations for civilian use.
The project is framed within the CIVIL UAV Initiative (CUI) supported by the Xunta de Galicia.
It is currently in the final phase of development corresponding to flight tests at the Rozas Aerodrome, Lugo.

OPV Concept Advantages

The TARGUS system is based on the Tecnam P2006T platform, which, unlike Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, allows it to be operated in two modes:
  • Manned Mode, where a pilot on board handles the aircraft like a conventional plane.
  • UAV Mode, where the operation of the aircraft and all its functionalities are controlled from a base located on the ground.
It should be noted that the system allows a third mode of operation (mixed mode) that accelerates the development and testing of new capabilities and functionalities.
TARGUS is an optimal solution for executing operations in controlled airspaces, since having been conceived as an OPV system from its origin, the platform retains the CS23 certification even with the autonomous system modifications installed. Likewise, it allows executing, when required, flights of extended duration, in dangerous environments and with greater safety simply by operating the aircraft remotely.
Another key aspect is that the transition between manned and remotely manned mode is immediate, without the need for complex operations or configuration changes.

Certified Platform

Based on a certified twin-engine general aviation aircraft, Targus’ dual FCS (triple optionally), redundant dual primary flight controls, and automated fault management system make it a highly reliable platform.
Developed from the TECNAM P2006T, TARGUS provides a versatile and flexible airborne mission platform with optimal range, high efficiency and extremely low life cycle cost for a wide variety of mission types including, defense, intelligence, application of law and investigation.
TARGUS can be operated from a remote ground control station specifically designed for such a system. The ground station allows the installation of up to three payload and flight control operation posts. The layout and configuration of the control posts can be modified depending on the profile of each mission or operator’s requirements.
Technical characteristics:
The main characteristics of TARGUS are summarized below:
·         Based on the Tecnam P2006T platform.
·         High electricity generation capacity (3KW).
·         Redundant Action and Flight Control System.
·         Allows operation in both modes: Manned and Unmanned (UAV).
·         It allows the flexible integration of multiple payloads, including MRI system (Radar AESA + MX10 + AIS + LoS Datalink).
·         Autopilot with ATOL capabilities.
·         Two-way redundant LOS Datalink.
·         Complete remote control of all flight surfaces, engines, propellers, landing gear and auxiliary systems.
·         Monitoring the status of the aircraft, engines and electrical system.
·         Ground station integrated into a single compact shelter, including flight control and payload.

Performance and Operation

The TARGUS system is part of Class III UAVs, whose most outstanding performance data are indicated below:
·         Autonomy extended to 8-10 hours depending on the payload.
·         Operating ceiling: 14,000 ft.
·         MTOW: 1,230 kgs. Great load capacity.
·         Reduced Stall Speed (47 kts) allowing great maneuverability and wide safety margin.
·         Wide range of operating speed: from 55 to 145 kts.
·         Minimal operation and maintenance cost.
·         High Wing: optimal maneuverability in surveillance missions.
·         Twin-piston engine. High reliability and low operating cost.
The system has been developed by GAERUM together with the most recognized and solvent partners in the aeronautical and security sector, such as INDRA, S-PLANE and AIRBORNE TECHNOLOGIES.
